Barbara Rodio is one of the most promising young violists of her generation, embodying the perfect fusion of refinement, artistic sensitivity and a profound and conscious musical vision. Since April 2024 she has been collaborating with the Vienna Philharmonic (State Opera), with whom she will tour the United States under the baton of Riccardo Muti and Yannick Nézet- Séguin in March 2025. She has performed as first viola soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Academy in the production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos at the ORF RadioKulturhaus (Kai Röhrig) and with the Webern Symphonieorchester at the Musikverein (Daniel Harding, Antoine Tamestit). She also performed with the Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic in Beethoven's Septet.
Her upcoming concerts include her debut as soloist in the Goldener Saal of the Vienna Musikverein on April 6, 2025, with Requiem by Puccini, and the Eurydice String Quartet's debut at the Graz Opera with Lukas Kranzelbinder's Mein Lieblingstier heißt Winter.
As a chamber musician she has participated in prestigious festivals such as Arsonore (Graz), Garda Lake Music Festival (Desenzano del Garda) and the Accademia Chigiana Summer Festival (Siena) and has collaborated with artists such as Rainer Küchl, Lidia Baich, Markus Schirmer, Jevgēnijs Čepoveckis, Thomas Selditz and Kerstin Feltz.
Her orchestral activity, which also includes collaborations with the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Orchestra Nazionale della RAI and the the Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, has led her to collaborate with internationally renowned conductors such as Daniel Harding, Manfred Honeck, Robert Trevino, Fabio Luisi, Gergely Madaras, Hannu Lintu, Simone Young, Emmanuel Villaume and others. She was first viola in several youth ensembles and won the audition for the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in 2022. In 2022 she also won the First Prize and the “Bach Special Prize” at the “32nd Città di Barletta Competition”.
Barbara's career has solid roots thanks to an educational background of excellence. Born in Bari in 2000, she started playing violin at the age of 5. She continued her musical studies in violin at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatory of Bari, graduating with honors in 2017 under the guidance of Maestro Cristiano Rossi. In 2018, she began studying viola at the Kunstuniversität in Graz with Prof. Peter Barsony and graduated with honors from the Conservatorio “Umberto Giordano” in Foggia in 2020.
